Running Excel and Adding Data

Select Start, then Programs, then, then Microsoft Office 2000, then Microsoft Excel

Excel will display an empty spreadsheet

 

Select OK in the User Name menu, if necessary

 

Enter the values for t, 0 to 7, in rows 1 to 8 in column A,

 

  Enter your car's new value in row 1 to 8 in column C  
  Enter tour car's decimal depreciation rate in rows 1 to 8 in column D  

Getting Excel to calculate the y values

Enter the formula 

Select cell B1

 

 

Enter the formula that calculates the current value. Enter the formula as you would on the calculator except:

  • Start the formula with the equals sign.

  • Use the asterisk for multiplication

  • Use the carat for exponents

  • Use the cell address (A1), rather than the actual value for the x value

Excel will display the value of the car after year 0 in the cell

 

Copy the formula into the other cells by selecting B1

Click the Copy icon

Excel will display an animated dotted line around the cell

 

Position the cursor over the B2 cell and press, but do not release, the mouse button.

 

 

With the mouse button still held down, move the cursor down column B to the last row with data.

Excel will highlight the cells that you move over

 

Release the mouse button

 

 

Press the Paste icon

Excel will display the values of your car in the cells in column B

 

Select column B

Click on the dolar sign icon on the menu bar

 

 

Creating the Scatter Chart

Select the Insert entry from the menu bar,

Pops up the Inset menu.

 

Select the Chart… entry from the Insert menu.

Displays the Chart Wizard

 

If necessary, move the Chart Wizard menu so you can see all the columns with numbers

 

 

From the Chart Type menu, select XY (Scatter),

From the Chart sub-type menu, select a line graph

Select Next

Displays the Data Range window

 

Select the Data Range tab

 

 

Click the icon to the right of the Data Range field

 

 

Position the cursor over the A1 (upper left) cell and press, but do not release, the mouse button.

Cell A1 will have a moving, dotted-line border

 

Move the cursor to the last number in column B

The dotted border will grow.

 

Release the mouse button.

 

 

Select the icon on the right of the Chart Source data menu

 

 

Select Next>

Displays the Titles Menu

 

Enter a chart title into the Chart Title field. Make sure your name and the car model are in the title.

 

 

Enter “Years” into the Value (X) axis field

 

 

Enter “Value” into the Categories (Y) axis field

 

 

Select Next>

Displays the Chart location menu

 

Select the As new sheet radio button

 

 

Select Finish

Displays the scatter chart on the worksheet.

 

Print two copies of your sheet

Hand in one to the teacher

 

 

Save your workbook using your name as the file name
