Textbook and Notes

We will not be using a text book. You will be given a copy of the notes before each lesson. I expect you will annotate the notes during the lesson. I also expect you will put the notes into your loose-leaf binder. Homework will be included in the notes, a separate hand-out, or on-line.

Web site

The web site for this class is a page under the mrkretsch.pbworks.com web site. The web site will have this syllabus, a class calendar, and my lesson plans. Most important, this site will have the class notes and class project assignments. At some point you will be requesting a log-in on this web site.

Supplies

A loose leave binder with lined paper and a pen or pencil.

Marking Period Grades

Assignment grades will be posed on the parent portal.

Homework

  • Homework is 15% of the marking period grade.
  • Complete, on-time homework will be given a 100%; late or incomplete homework will be given a 75%.
  • Any homework will be marked late if you are tardy or unprepared for class.
  • Absent homework must be made up within one week of your return, or it will be considered late.
  • All homework must be made up before the unit test or it will be marked as a zero.
  • Occasionally, extra-credit homework will be graded 120.
  • Homework passes will be given for heroism.

Tests and Projects

  • Tests and projects are 80% of the marking period grade.
  • There will be a test at the end of each unit, except for unit three, which will have two tests.
  • There will be a several projects for each marking period:
    • First marking period: Design a game for a carnival to be held after election day.
    • Second marking period: Design a baseball game
    • Third marking period: Jeopardy
  • Test must be made up within five days of your return. Make-up tests must be taken outside of class.

Class Participation

Class participation is 5% of your marking period grade.  Everyone starts with a 80%. Points are added for: asking questions and making comments during lessons, volunteering answers to homework, helping classmates during in-class activities, taking leadership, etc. Points are deduction for protocol violations, dominating discussions, etc.

Exams

There will be midterm exam. The final exam is a opinion poll project.

AP Exam

Although this class does not follow the AP curriculum, students can take the AP Statistics exam in May. There will be additional study sessions leading up to the AP exam. Taking the AP exam will not exempt you from the final.

Class Protocol

Class rules can be summarized in three phrases...

Be Responsible

  • Finish exercises and homework on time; make up your absences
  • Be on time and prepared for class. Bring your notebook to class every day.
  • Leave food and drink in your back pack or locker.

Be Respectful

  • Raise your hand to interrupt the class.
  • Use appropriate language.
  • Cheer your classmates who succeed; help your classmates who struggle
  • Do not interfere with classmates who are trying to learn.

Be Ready to Learn

  • Make math your priority while in this room
  • Join class activities and discussions.
  • Pay attention to the lesson.
  • Leave distractions in your packpack

Consequences of not following the protocol

  • Class participation points deduction
