Goals of the Course

Students will know the fundamental knowledge and skills that make up the engineering profession.

Topics

  • Engineering as a career
  • Engineering's relationship to technology and science
  • Basic engineering tools and skills.
  • Creating a system
  • The engineering design process

Textbook and Notes

We will not be using a textbook but instead the class notes will be handed out prior to each lesson. I expect you to annotate the notes as we discuss them in class. Homework will be included in the notes, a seprate handout or listed on the web site.

Web Site:

The web site for this class is http://mrkretsch.pbworks.com . The web site will have this syllabus, a class calendar, and my lesson plans. Most important, this site will have the class notes and class project assignments. At some point you will be instructed to request a log-in on the web site.

Supplies:

A loose leave binder with lined paper and a pencil or pen. Occasionally you might be asked to provide materials for our projects. Finally, there could be a couple of field trips that will require a fee.

Graded Course Components

Grades will be calculated from homework assignments, projects, and tests. Assignment grades will be available on the Parent Portal.

Homework

Homework assignments will count as 15% of your grade. Homework that is not handed in on time will lose points. Homework missed due to an absence must be made up within five days of your return.

Project and Tests

Projects and tests will count for 85% of your grade. Projects will usually involve the construction of some object and are graded according to a rubric. Projects missed due to an absence must be made up within five days of your return. Each unit will include one or two tests that will assess knowledge of concepts and skills covered in the unit. Tests missed due to an absence must be made up within five days of your return.

Class Participation

Class participation is 5% of your marking period grade.  Everyone starts with a 80%. Points are added for: asking questions and making comments during lessons, volunteering answers to homework, helping classmates during in-class activities, taking leadership, etc. Points are deduction for protocol violations, dominating discussions, etc.

Exams

We will have a project for the midterm grade, and a final exam. Seniors with a A average for the class are exempt from the final.
